Statement from the Artist

My mom makes hooked rugs, and years ago a friend of hers gave her a bunch of old, unwanted rug-hooking materials. Within that stash was this piece: someone had marked out the pattern on the backing cloth, hooked one circle with bright colors, and stopped working on it. I wanted to learn how to make hooked rugs, so my mom offered me the piece to finish. She gave me a stash of stripped wool—a combination of old wool she'd bought at thrift stores and stripped herself and gifted material from other hookers—and I took the piece home to finish. I liked the way the previous owner had started the piece, so I tried to follow her (?) lead with the colors. But I was limited by the wool I had access to. Sometimes I ran out of a color I was using before I could fill a space and I'd have to start over with a new color, or marble in a second color to fill things out. When I ran out of wool, my mom sent me more in the mail.
